Dr. Christopher D. Vanderwal Wins the 2015 The Journal of Organic Chemistry Outstanding Author of the Year Lectureship Award

The ACS Division of Organic Chemistry and The Journal of Organic Chemistry are proud to announce Christopher D. Vanderwal, University of California, Irvine, as the winner of the 2015 The Journal of Organic Chemistry Outstanding Author of the Year Lectureship Award. Professor Vanderwal was nominated for his work on the synthesis of chlorosulfolipids. He will be presented with an award at a symposium in his honor at the fall ACS National Meeting, August 16-20, 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Professor Vanderwal's article describes the evolution of a general synthesis strategy for chlorosulfolipids, unusual natural products that are components of algal cell membranes and have been isolated from toxic mussels. Over the past several years, these highly chlorinated compounds have generated great interest, with many research groups engaging them as targets for synthesis. The Vanderwal strategy takes advantage of an interesting kinetic resolution of chlorinated cis-vinyl epoxides and showcases Z-selective alkene cross-metathesis reactions in complex settings. Danicalipin A, mytilipin A, and malhamensilipin A were prepared in 8-11 steps.
